Monochrome Changgyeonggung Palace In Snow | Seoul Photographer

Being South African, I didn't have a chance to see snow as frequently as I would have liked. In fact, I could only view snow from a distance a handful of times in my home town, Cape Town.

Fast forward to 8 years later and having experienced snow here in Seoul, South Korea, I feel I understand this silent falling white substance a bit better. I don't mean scientifically, of course, but rather photographically. I've come to realise that photographing snow requires a lot of thought and tactfulness because scenes are naturally minimalistic. This minimal characteristic tends to highlight all objects in the scene and can easily ruin compositions due to a lack of concentration. I often repeat the phrase "remove and highlight" while photographing in the snow.

I thoroughly enjoy shooting in the snow because I like how it impacts all the senses: Everything is bright. The only sound heard is when the snow is crunching under your boots. It's warmer than you think.

I honestly still get excited every time it snows after all these years.

Here are a collection of photographs made in and near Changgyeong Palace.

All images were made with the Fujifilm X-Pro 3 and XF 35mm f2

Thank you for visiting. See you soon.
